Flock - Browser of Web 2.0

This week a new browser debuted in public beta. Flock 0.7 is now available for download. Flock is an open-source browser based on the Firefox model, and shares many of Firefox's distinctive characteristics, such as tabbed browsing, built-in search box, easy customization, and amenability to extensions. In fact, many beloved Firefox extensions have been retooled to work in Flock.

Flock, however, was not designed just to be a Firefox spinoff. The purpose of the new browser was to integrate web 2.0 uses into the browser's normal functioning. Now this can mean different things to different people. In the case of Flock, this means making it easier to blog, read news feeds, share photographs, and maintain social bookmarks. You can read more about the goals of the project here.

With that in mind, I would like to give my thoughts on some of the unique aspects of the new browser.

Photographs: Users can choose between Flickr and Photobucket. (I imagine that in the future more services will be added.) The initial setup is fairly easy and can be done when the browser first opens. Photostreams can be displayed in a special bar across the top of the screen, and images can be dragged and dropped into the stream from webpages and Windows Explorer. The photo function works well together with the blogging function

flock-logo.jpg

Bookmarks/Favorites: I do not make much use of social bookmarking myself, so I am not the best person to comment on these features. It will suffice for me to say that the feature is fairly easy to set up, and you have a choice of del.icio.us or shadows. "Favorites" are automatically imported from your previous default browser. You can choose whether or not to make these public. Unfortunately for me, Flock broke apart my subfolders into top-level folders of their own, so that it is now hard to tell one from another.

Blogging: The blogging function, like the other social functions, is easy to setup. One can post to multiple blogs on different accounts. Right now, it is able to post to Blogger, Drupal, LiveJournal, MoveableType, Typepad, and WordPress through a WYSIWYG editor that provides the capability to edit source code, where necessary. It includes an option to add Technorati tags if you post through "File -> Publish to Blog..." rather than the "Publish" button on the editing window. It is also imperative to use the "File" menu to publish if you have several blogs registered and wish to make sure you publish to the correct one. I wish that there was a way to set one blog as the default.

Newsreader: News feeds (RSS/Atom) can be imported into Flock from other readers with varying degrees of ease. This browser makes it easy to add new feeds by clicking on the orange feed button in the location box and then working through a dialogue. Feeds open in a separate pane on the left side of the screen, much like the Firefox extension Sage.

Flock will not replace online newsreaders such as Bloglines or Feedburner for users who prefer that method of monitoring feeds. However, the built-in reader is a worthy replacement for the Sage extension from the Firefox browser, with two exceptions. One is that there does not seem to be a way to order the reader to check feeds; it does this on its own schedule. (To change this schedule, see here.) The second is that the newsreader does not seem to share Sage's lightweight and relatively fast performance. When I open the news, I have to click through two "script not responding" boxes before being able to read feeds; when the reader is running in the background, this can slow page loading and other functions to a crawl.

General evaluation: This last issue points to my biggest problem with the Flock browser as a whole, namely its footprint on system resources. I use a slightly dated computer (about four years old) with limited RAM. At the current time, Flock uses about 140 Megabytes of memory during normal use, a bit more than my middle-aged system can handle. For those of you who, like me, have an older machine, I would recommend sticking with Firefox (or another worthy browser) as your primary browser for the moment. Certainly it is worth giving Flock a try, but this browser really needs more system resources for a user to take full advantage of its capabilities. Overall I have found the current version of Firefox to respond more quickly on my computer. Your own mileage may vary, of course.

Perhaps the review so far sounds too negative. I actually do think that this is a promising browser. It just needs some improvement, which I am sure will come in future editions. I am a great fan of the open-source software movement, not only because it is free (always good), but also because it provides a more flexible model for developing new uses. In any case, it is worthwhile for bloggers or others who spend time online to download it and take a look at its features. You may find the new functions useful. Download Flock

Pidgin - Open-source IM client lets you chat with friends on different networks

There's one big problem with instant messaging programs --- they're each individual islands, unable to communicate with one another. If you're an AIM user, for example, you won't be able to communicate with MSN members, and vice versa. Pidgin solves the problem neatly. It's a simple universal messenger that lets you communicate with multiple IM networks from a single client. You'll be able to connect to AIM, Yahoo! Messenger, MSN, ICQ, and many others. Also useful is that there are plenty of free plug-ins available, including ones that can store a history of your IMs, store notes about buddies, and more. You may have heard of this program under a different name; until recently it was called GAIM. The image “http://pidgin.im/extension/pidgin/design/pidgin/images/pidgin_full.png” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. Download Pidgin 2.0.2 (10.8 MB)

AbiWord - Replace Word with this multiplatform, free alternative that covers the basics.

Tired of paying megabucks for Microsoft Office when all you need is a good, solid word processor? Then you're in luck. If you've got straightforward word processing chores, including inserting and handling images, you'll want this freebie. It features a simple straightforward interface; you won't need to spend hours trying to wrangle your way through ribbons or multi-level menus. What you need is right in front of you --- simple icons and menus across the top of the page, with no clutter. You'll most likely be surprised by the amount of features this free word processor packs in. For example, it handles mail merges, will insert pages numbers, date and time, and other auto text, and has some very nice tools for handling tables. Use this program enough, and you'll find that it's not just a money-saver, but a time-saver as well, because of its utter simplicity. Windows screenshot Download AbiWord

FileZilla - Excellent FTP client that combines simplicity with a robust feature set

FTP lives! This file transfer protocol may seem old-fashioned and ancient, but the truth is, it's often the simplest way to transfer files between PCs, or between a PC and a server. It's especially useful for transferring large files, because ISPs often block email attachments over a certain size. And it's great for transferring groups of files. FileZilla has just about every FTP feature you need. It's a breeze to set up and edit new FTP connections. The interface is particularly easy to use, so that you can easily navigate external FTP servers and your local hard drive, and transfer files between then. You can also use multiple simultaneous connections to speed up file transfers. Download FileZilla

ClamWin Free Antivirus - Free, small footprint anti-virus and anti-spyware scanner

Anti-virus software tends to be big and bloated, use plenty of RAM and system resources, and generally clog up your system. Worse is that increasingly, anti-virus makers make it difficult to buy anti-virus software by itself, and include firewalls, anti-spyware and other software with it. If you want a clean, mean piece of anti-virus software that does just one thing --- protect against viruses --- you'll want this program.

It has a small footprint, and doesn't take up much system resources. It will scan your entire hard disk at once for viruses and spyware, or can scan individual files and folders.

It also includes a Microsoft Outlook add-in to remove virus-infected attachments automatically from your email. There is one drawback to the program, though: It doesn't include real-time virus protection.

MediaCoder - Convert files between many media formats.

If you need to transform media files between formats, shrink files with little quality loss, extract audio from video files, and much more, this is the program for you.

It'll convert files between media formats, giving you a great deal of control over the output. So, for example, if you have a file that you'd like to convert so it can be played on a portable media player, MediaCoder will do the trick.

It can also save you plenty of hard disk space by shrinking media files. There are also lots of extensions you can download that expand the program?s abilities, such as make it easy to transcode files for specific media players.

Miro - Video feed agregator and recorder with a grassroots bent also lets you search the major video sites from one program

Note: Miro is the new name for Democray Player. Video is the most interesting thing on the web these days, but it's easy to get stuck on YouTube looking for the diamonds among the lip-synching teenagers and inebriated video camera abusers. The Participatory Culture Foundation offers this video feed aggregator-cum-personal video recorder as part of its larger goal of jumpstarting a grassroots Internet TV model. Democracy player lets you browse and subscribe to video channels, including Seed Magazine's science clips, Comedy Central, Adult Swim, music video channels, and Democracy Now. You can also search the major video web sites without leaving the player. Just like your Tivo box, Democracy Player expires and deletes older videos automatically to keep your hard disk from filling up. screenshot Download Miro

Inkscape - Very good vector graphics editor that is also suitable for photo editing

If you're looking for a graphics program that lets you create illustrations and graphics, much like Freehand or Illustrator, then give Inkscape a whirl. It includes a surprisingly powerful set of tools for creating graphics from scratch, or for editing existing graphics or photographs. You'll find numerous drawing tools, the ability to create layers and combine them, and more. The program supports the standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format, as well as many others. It imports files from many formats, including .jpg, .png, .tif and others, and exports to numerous vector-based formats and .png. --Preston Gralla

Gimpshop - Get high-end photo editing capabilities for free

Open Source software has never been known for its photo processing prowess. Until now, that is. Gimpshop is an exceedingly powerful Photoshop lookalike that has far more features than you, or most people you know, will ever use. If you're looking to do something as simple as touch up photos, or something far more sophisticated, like work in multiple layers, it has the tools you need. There are also numerous effects and filters, the ability to easily create color gradients, and plenty more. In fact, if all you want to do is basic photo-retouching, it's probably overkill. But if you want to indulge your inner artist, there's plenty. The program is based on a long-time Open Source favorite, GIMP, but has more fit and polish, and a Photoshop-like identity. eMule 0.48a

eMule is one of the biggest and most reliable peer-to-peer file sharing clients around the world. Thanks to it's open source policy many developers are able to contribute to the project, making the network more efficient with each release. eMule is a filesharing client which is based on the eDonkey2000 network, but offers more features than the standard eDonkey client.

http://www.slyck.com/newspics/emulelogo.jpg

What can I say? The massive growth in peer to peer filesharing has sparked the development of brand new networks, great new ideas, wide varieties of software and even a modification community which sets out to improve the open-source clients available throughout the community.

Emule is one client which caught my attention immediately. Stemming from the slow-down of development of the edonkey client (Edonkey2000.com) in favour of a new project by the company which founded the edonkey network. Emule opens a brand new world in fast file-sharing... and being fair about it. You get what you give. The great thing about open-source is you have a community supported effort in improvement of the product, which is what has brought eMule so far, so fast.

Functionality:

eMule works differently than it's rival, the original eDonkey client. It uses a credit system which brings about true filesharing. The more you upload to a single client, the more they will share that same file with you. Generally, files are shared in parts. So you get what's available at the fatest speed, and with the new generation eMule, you can download multiple parts at multiple times... which makes getting what you need faster.

One thing that caught my attention with the eMule client is it's fast search abilities. You have the ability to send search strings to all available servers with the click of one button. The typical original edonkey client required you to click the "Extend Search" button over and over to get the results from multiple servers. This in it's self makes eMule superior.

The "mod" community also makes eMule an attractive client. Not only do these projects include recent eMule clients, but they also integrate new and innovative features including banning, better download management, upload throttling and much more.

Conclusion:

eMule has definately got the attention of the shrinking eDonkey user community. And luring more back to the scene from competeting commercial clients such as kazaa and morpheus, and there's a lot of reason why there's such a flood coming back to revive the eDonkey network. No spyware, no nags, no ads... More availablity and most importantly of all, the available of large files which would otherwise be unavailable to the general internet community as a whole.

eMule gets my attention, and keeps it with the rapid developement and bug tracking they've displayed from the beginning of the project. The community and developers get my thumbs up because it's community development at it's best.

LimeWire 4.12.8

LimeWire is the world's fastest P2P file-sharing application for all types of computer files, including music, video, pictures, games, and text documents. Other features include dynamic querying, file previews during download, advanced techniques for locating rare files, and an easy, clean user interface. LimeWire's new spam blocker gets rid of junk results, and automatic updates will keep you sharing faster than ever with the latest version. You can search for Creative Commons and Weedshare licensed files, and publish your own creative works with Creative Commons licensing. LimeWire continues its guarantee of no adware or spyware. Version 4.12.8 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes. From its start as a post-Napster clone to its leading role as the quintessential Gnutella client, LimeWire has been one of the highest-profile P2P applications. The 4.0 series further ups the ante with a combination of new features, an updated interface, and better all-around performance.

On the surface, the refined and zippier Java interface houses some snazzy new icons and a few new features, including a connection-quality meter and a button matrix for zeroing in on specific file types. The search interface now sports a progress bar, and file information--such as artist and album--is more clearly displayed. The improved network performance gave us considerably more search results than previous versions and a more reliable downloading experience (for a P2P client, that is). This latest version also feels more nimble despite its inherently resource-heavy Java-based foundation. We like the What's New feature, which lists files recently added to the network. The check box to filter out adult content also is a nice touch.

The new features and overall functionality make this by far the most mature version of LimeWire to date. Despite the typical performance flaws found in all file-sharing clients, this latest version continues to offer solid performance and good looks across the board.

Firefox 2.0.0.5

Mozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured Web browser that makes browsing more efficient than ever before. Firefox includes pop-up blocking; a tab-browsing; integrated Google searching; simplified privacy controls that let you cover your tracks more effectively; a streamlined browser window that shows you more of the page than any other browser; and a number of additional features that work with you to help you get the most out of your time online.

Version 2.0.0.5 is a necessary security update that makes several fixes, including one for privilege escalation using external event handlers.

Firefox Wordmark Bad Examples

Even though Internet Explorer dominates the Web browser market, you might wonder why if you spend some time with Mozilla Firefox. This light and nimble Web wonder brought tabbed browsing into the mainstream (IE7 recently jumped on the bandwagon) and offers countless ways to customize it through extensions and themes. Drag-and-drop tabs with individual close buttons help keep your content organized the way you like, and you can further streamline your browsing through the use of extensive hot keys. You'll find all of the regular options and features required for surfing the Web in the default setup, but the groundbreaking features come with the thousands of third-party extensions. Likewise, if you don't like the look of the default interface, there are hundreds of slick themes to use, though many weren't updated for version 2 at its release.

Firefox is the perfect browser for those involved with Web design and coding. A JavaScript debugger comes standard, and Firefox displays the page-source code in a new window, using indents and color-coded tags similar to an HTML editor. The built-in pop-up blocker works great for most sites, and new antiphishing protections and enhanced security for extensions are in the version 2 release. Anyone looking for a full-featured browser with seemingly endless ways to customize should download this powerhouse.
